'Cause we've never really gotten to talk about the very beginning.
- We met on the bandstand, actually.
I was in a band that I had been in for decades, and this was a time in 2005 we needed to replace one of the musicians.
So we had auditions and he came in to play, and he ended up staying in the band 'cause he was a good fit.
Although I did say to him, you know, he had come from a very different world of just playing, you know, stinky, nasty, slappy, you know, swampy bass, and this band that we were in, we were very particular about playing things accurately, so- - Where are we located?
Where is this?
- We're in New York, and it was probably Long Island, I think.
And so he came in and he just did his like, you know, stuff.
And at the end of it, I knew the guys liked him and wanted him to join the band, but I pulled him aside.
I said, listen, "If you really want this gig, you gotta go home and you gotta learn your parts, and know them.
You can't just fake it."
And he did.
I think he wanted the gig.
So that's where we met.
He ended up in that band, we met on that bandstand.
- But the only reason I learned those parts was 'cause she was kinda cute, so I thought maybe I'll... - Do anything for her?
And you're doing this, so you were playing electric bass at that time?
- Yeah, yeah.
- That's true.
- All electric.
- But it was a jazz group?
- No, I never sang jazz until I got to Montana.
Most of what we did in New York for decades was wedding bands, corporate affairs, private parties.
I did a lot of recording and studio work, so did Mike.
Jingles, you know, commercials, radio stuff.
Both of us, I think playing, doing the wedding circuit, in New York they call them club dates, was the best education.
I think we both would agree.
You know, you can't learn about all that music, those different styles and genres of music in school.
You've gotta be out there doing it.
I kinda fell into this jazz thing when I got to Montana because when I first got here, I wanted to meet musicians, and there were open jazz jams, particularly in Billings where we were.
So, you know, Mike had grown up here and knew a lot of these players who were still here or who had left and come back, so I just started going to the jams and sitting in and meeting people, and because they were jazz jams I was singing jazz tunes, and I was like, "Ooh, I gotta learn some more jazz standards," you know?
And I think people then started to see me as a jazz singer.
I'm really not a jazz singer.
I'm more of a blues, I think bluesy... I'm not even sure what I am, honestly.
You know, I just sing the way I feel, and I guess all the artists that have influenced me over the years, kind of meld together and then I kind of found my own thing.
So I do jazz standards, but I think they're with a little more of a blues flare.

I don't know, I don't think it exists.

- I wonder if you haven't.
You know, and to your point of doing a song that this person did, so you kind of lean in that direction, and then doing a song that that person did, so you lean in that direction.
And you end up either as a singer or as a player, kind of after a while, it all just becomes this big thing that maybe is what you become.
(laughs) - Well, it definitely becomes more organic.
And with my Elana Hayden and the Sugar Daddies, which I love, and he thought of that name by the way, among other names that we will probably not mention, but that was the one that stuck.
It's kind of become this like, country-fried jazz or something.
I don't even know what to call it.
We were trying to think of a name for this genre, so.
- To be honest, I think that's where your style does emerge from because it's a polymorph of all these different things, but you are the common denominator.
And so suddenly, you know, and same thing, you know, when you're playing an instrument like bass, you know all these other bass players and you know how they feel, and yet your body and how you breathe and how you phrase sorta drives the entire thing.
But, you know, they've used that word polystylism as a classical terminology to try to describe this third stream admixture where you take this from this, and music is so ubiquitous that you can't be a purist in a particular genre pocket.

Obviously we had a lotta coverage on your pedal steel player, but he was just ready to, "What can I give to this?"
- Jeff Taylor, that guy?
- He's great.
- Is just such a gifted player.
- He's just- - He's really gifted and he's got great ears and great instincts and he really listens, and you know, he doesn't play jazz, but he wanted to, and he wanted to learn.
And I forgot even where we did a first gig together.
It might have been at the jam at Levity because he would sit in there.
- Probably was.
Yeah.
- And I think that's where we met originally, and I sat in and did a couple of standards and he was there, and I thought, "Wow, that's the coolest thing.
I never ever would've thought of like having a pedal steel player play at a jazz jam."
- Well, and playing major seventh and major ninth chords, and there are some pretty far out voicings, and I thought, my respect was like, yeah man, you're not trying to say, "Let me fit this sixth chord in here."
- No.
- Yeah.
Yes.
- He was very appropriate, and I was really impressed, and in some way I was like, "Wow, I gotta figure out how to incorporate him into some gigs.
And this is kinda cool actually.
I like this."
And that's why I wanted him to be part of this episode because I thought this is not something that people are used to seeing around here, or anywhere for that matter.
And I just, I don't know, I just was really digging the whole pedal steel with these jazz standards.
It was just too cool.
- Yeah.
- And you have a real rich amalgamation of styles, 'cause I know you can go the Jocko route, you can get as technical as you need to, but you can be Charlie Haden.
I mean, you have an ability- - Oh, bless you.
Oh my goodness, that's- - Oh no, when we played together, that was my first thought, "This is Charlie Haden," 'cause you're so respectful to the music.
I'm never sure what you're gonna say next, but it's always the perfect thing and it's never showy.
It's like, "Just exactly what do we need here?
Let me give you this jewel."
(Mike laughs) You're good at it, Mike.
- You're very kind, Eric.
- Not at all.
- Thank you.

- I've played with a lotta bass players.
- You know, I think, well, and to what you just said, though, and especially being in, you know, the bass is the foundational thing, but it's also a supportive role.
To do that, it's not about me, it's about the music.
What is the coolest thing?
What's the most perfect thing that the music should have happen at this moment?
You know, it's not about playing some flashy thing.
That would be disrespectful to the music, I think.
And, I mean, I think there's no greater proponent of what you said than a guy like Charlie Haden, who was just so respectful to the music.
It takes a lotta time, and a lotta playing, and a lotta years to get comfortable enough on your instrument so that you can leave yourself behind and just do what's necessary for the music.
- One of the things that I love about the way Mike plays, and which is why I always torture him to do my gigs instead of everybody else's gigs, is because he's so versatile, he's so flexible, and I'm gonna use a phrase that he always uses, it's always the right tie with the right suit.
And what I mean by that is he plays the appropriate thing for the appropriate piece of music, the appropriate style, the appropriate genre.
And he can dig in when it's time to dig in, and then he knows when it's time to not dig in.

And now suddenly we're all in Montana.
Did you come back here and you came back here to join?
Kinda put the loose parts of this knot together.
- Well... - When COVID happened, New York was a nightmare.
- Yeah, it was really bad.
- And I sat there for a while, and you know, we were trying to figure out, she was- - [Elana] Well, there was no work at all.
- There was none.
- There was no music, there were no venues.
- That's right.
- Everything shut down and it was really bad in New York.
I think after a couple of months he was getting buggy, understandably.
(Mike chuckling) - Put politely.
- Yeah, I mean, it's hard.
You know, when 40 years of your life, you know, you play music every weekend and multiple times a week, and then it's like you hit a brick wall, and cold turkey, nothing.
Couldn't do anything.
So he said, "You know, I think I'm gonna go home back to Montana," where he was raised, his family is still here," and like kinda ride it out."
Thinking it would be, what, a couple of weeks?
- A month, two, whatever.
Yeah.
- And he came to the cabin and stayed here, in fact.
- Right here.
- I was still in New York.
So, this was in 2020.
And after he'd been here for, I don't know, a couple of months, he said, "You know, I'm kinda digging being back in Montana.
I think I might wanna stay."
I'm like, what?
What?
Like, Montana?
Okay.
- Was there an invitation?
Did you say you might wanna come over here?
- I'd been saying that actually for a while.
- Yes.
- Ah.
- For a while.
But he also said, "But I don't know if you're gonna like it," knowing that I'm a native New Yorker.
So, but there was an open invitation.
So, it took about two years because I was still working.
I have a daughter, and she was still living at home at that time.
So, there were logistical challenges.
And I think I kept thinking he would come back.
And then when I realized he really was staying in Montana, then I thought, all right, I think maybe I'll go try and see what life is like in Montana.
And the planets aligned, and things worked out, and my daughter moved out and started to go live with some friends, and I just purged and got rid of everything I owned, and I got in my Honda Fit, and I took my cat, Lulu, and my microphone.
That's a big adjustment to go from life in New York to life in Montana.
You know, the Big Apple, Big Sky, big difference.
- My phone rang and it was a guy saying, "Hey, I've got a gig and it's a duo thing, and you wanna come play?"
And I said, "Honestly, I'm working.
My girlfriend just got here from New York, though.
Do a duet with her."
And she went up to Big Sky.
- And that was actually with Craig Hall, who was a Bozeman musician.
Amazing, monster guitar player.
And he was doing a gig in Big Sky at a hotel in a lounge, Apres Ski, up at the summit.
And I had literally just gotten here, and I'm like, I don't even know where I'm- - Stepped outta the car, and we're like, "So, I can't believe you made it.
Here, have some coffee."
Phone rings and she's got a gig.
(laughs) - Yeah, and it was a weekly gig for the entire winter.
It was like from December to April.
That was my first gig.
